Flaitz\, DDS\, MS \nThat the times have changed over the past years for all children and adolescents is an understatement and the diseases in the mouth are no exception. This interactive course focuses on new infectious diseases\, recently recognized head and neck manifestations of common diseases\, updated causes about well-recognized oral lesions\, newly described oral conditions\, and the latest treatment approaches for symptomatic lesions. A range of soft tissues and bony entities and periodontal diseases are described for this age group. It is important to be familiar with the contributions of new infections\, habits\, and behaviors in the development of some of these oral conditions. Characteristic signs and symptoms are highlighted\, along with a potential connection to systemic diseases\, behavioral health issues\, and medication utilization. The one thing that has not changed is that a lot is going on in the mouths of our children. \n\nDr. Catherine Flaitz is clinical professor and chair\, Division of Diagnostic Sciences\, University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and adjunct faculty\, Department of Pediatric Dentistry\, Children’s Hospital Colorado and Denver Health\, pediatric Dental Residency Program. In addition\, she is the dental school liaison for the Center for Bioethics and Humanities\, CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Flaitz earned her dental degree from Creighton University and received specialty certification in both pediatric dentistry and oral and maxillofacial pathology from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She participates on multiple editorial boards including section editor for Pediatric Dentistry and the Journal of the American Dental Association. Presently\, she is president\, American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology\, and serves on the Clinical Investigation and Abstract Committee\, American Academy of Oral Medicine and is a consultant\, Council of Clinical Affairs\, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has been a recipient of multiple teaching and research awards\, including the 2023 Honorary Fellowship from the American Academy of Oral Medicine and 2023 Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from the School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Flaitz is a prolific author including 2 color atlases on oral diseases. She enthusiastically shares her clinical and research experiences and passion for teaching in a practical way. \n\nSaturday – 7:45 AM – 12:15 PM \n“Contemporary Pediatric Restorative Dentistry\, From Minimally Invasive to Comprehensive Care”\nby Kevin J. Donly\, DDS\, MS \nThis course will discuss glass ionomer cements and their development through the contemporary photopolymerized glass ionomers\, including clinical utilization\, advantages and disadvantages. Bioactive restorative materials\, their unique formulation\, and clinical utilization will also be addressed. \nThe use of resin-based composites in Pediatric Dentistry will be reviewed\, including the concept of using hybrid\, flowable\, universal and condensable resins. Appropriate clinical utilization\, indications\, contraindications\, advantages\, and disadvantages will be discussed. Full coverage crowns will also be discussed including stainless steel crowns\, resin-faced crowns\, strip crowns\, zirconia crowns and “Hall Technique” placed crowns. \n\nDr. Kevin Donly is currently a Professor and Chair Emeritus for the Department of Developmental Dentistry and at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Rothman\, DMD \nThis course will review the current practice and recommendations for pediatric minimal and moderate sedation. Understanding your patient and their family is key as is utilizing both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies for successful sedations.  We will begin with a basis in psychology\, physiology and pharmacology and progress through monitoring\, drug selection and office protocols. Despite best practice\, sedation and medical emergencies can and will happen. A review of identification and immediate intervention will round out the course. This talk will discuss the history of these two classes of materials\, their use in pediatric dentistry\, and their unique role in preventive dentistry. Finally\, most interestingly\, I will discuss an alternative way of command setting Glass Ionomers that may decrease the setting time and increase its use in clinical dentistry.[/vc_column_text]Register [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]Speakers[vc_column_text]Dr. David L. Rothman earned his B.A. cum laude from the SUNY at Buffalo and his DDS from NYU College of Dentistry. He completed a GPR at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia\, Anesthesiology Residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania\, and a Pediatric Dentistry Residency at Children’s Hospital/Oakland and the University of California\, San Francisco. \nAs course director for the Pediatric sedation course of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology he implemented a new curriculum and coordinates and lectures.  Dr. Rothman has been published in the Journal of the California Dental Association\, the Journal of the American Dental Association\, the Journal of the American Society of Dentistry for Children\, ADSA Pulse as well as various component newsletters. He recently (2019) was guest editor for two issues of the Journal of the California Dental Association on Safety in Dentistry. His most recent publication\, Remineralization Therapy for Children was published in the January 2022 issue of Inside Dental Hygiene. Flaitz\, DDS\, MS[vc_column_text]Title: “Plethora of Oral Lesions I Caught From Pediatric Dentists During the Pandemic” \nThis pandemic has been a topsy-turvy experience for all of us and many children are caught in the middle of this chaos. Overall\, this age group has escaped the severe manifestations and outcomes of COVID-19 infection; however\, there is no detour around the multiple and potentially toxic stressors experienced during the pandemic. This course will explore the latest oral findings associated with COVID-19 infection\, including long-haul COVID\, and discuss what other diseases that they mimic in youth. It will also focus on a wide range of stress-induced and other common oral conditions that children are experiencing\, along with the best management approaches. A wide variety of new lesions\, the latest updates on common entities\, and evidence-based treatments will round out the discussion. A case-based format will illustrate consults from pediatric dentists during this challenging time when access to care was restricted. Course participants are encouraged to submit examples of oral and facial lesions that they have detected for an interactive and practical conversation. \nObjectives\n\nReview the oral manifestations of COVID-19 infection and its sequelae in children.\nDiagnose a variety of common oral lesions in children that dentists detected during the pandemic.\nSelect the best management approaches for the child-patient.\n\nDr. Flaitz is interim chair and clinical professor\, Division of Diagnostic Sciences\, The University of Colorado Anschutz School of Dental Medicine\, and adjunct professor\, Division of Pediatric Dentistry\, The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. In addition\, she is the dental school liaison for the Center for Bioethics and Humanities\, CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Flaitz earned her dental degree from Creighton University and received specialty certification in both pediatric dentistry and oral and maxillofacial pathology from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She participates on multiple editorial boards including section editor for Pediatric Dentistry and the Journal of the American Dental Association. Presently\, she serves as vice president\, American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and is a former pediatric dental consultant for the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Some of her honors include recipient of the UT Health President’s Scholar Award for Teaching Excellence and the Texas Dentist of the Year\, through the Texas Academy of General Dentistry.
