Dentistry and the Use of Controlled Substances

The abuse of prescription narcotics has reached epidemic proportions across the nation. Both national and statewide efforts to combat the problem affect the practice of dentistry across the nation. This course will review safe and ethical ways to prescribe and monitor the use of controlled substances as they relate to dental care and how to manage dental pain consistent with standards of care.
What attendee will learn:
- The nature and magnitude of the opioid epidemic in the US
- How controlled substances work to control pain
- Identification of drug-seeking behavior in patients
- Reasonable standards of care relating to safe and effective pain management including approved procedures for prescribing and monitoring
- Effective patient communication regarding the use of opioids or other controlled substances

Jacqueline Plemons, DDS, MS
Dr. Plemons is a board-certified periodontist in Dallas, TX. Located in the Park Cities area, she is dedicated to providing the highest quality of periodontal and oral health care in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
Dr. Plemons attended Texas A&M University for her undergraduate training before graduating from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1986. She completed her periodontal residency in 1988 earning a Master of Science in Oral Biology and a Certificate in Periodontics. Dr. Plemons also completed a Fellowship in Oral Medicine and has advanced training in dental implants and dental anesthesiology.
In addition to her private periodontal practice, Dr. Plemons is a Professor in the Department of Periodontics at Texas A&M School of Dentistry where she contributes to the education and training of the next generation of dentists and periodontists. She serves as the Director of the Stomatology Center, a nationally recognized center for patients suffering from unique medical conditions affecting the oral cavity.
Dr. Plemons lectures across the United States and has published numerous articles in periodontics, oral medicine, and dental implants.

Attention Doctors with a Texas license…
This course matches the controlled substance CE requirement for DEA registration holders (22 Texas Administrative Code §111.1(b)). An attendee can also cross apply the 2 hours to the controlled substance CE requirement for dentists providing direct patient care — 4 hours total for license renewal–(22 Texas Administrative Code §104.1(2)(B)).
This course can be used to satisfy both the new 2-hour requirement for prescribers with DEA permits as well as 2 of the 4-hour biennial requirement for dentists providing direct patient care.
Cancellation/Refund Policy
Cancellations must be received in writing no later than Wednesday, June 12, 2024. A full refund, less a $10 processing fee, will be issued for those received by that deadline. All refunds will be processed within 30 days after the meeting.
